Hyperventilating because of too much alcohol?!

Question: I had a bit too much to drink last night, about 10 shots of vodka (I know, stupid me, won't do that again), I was at a friends house and it wasn't heated in there, it was probably about 40 degrees. I was laying down, all of a sudden just started breathing extremely hard and fast, couldn't catch my breath or calm down, all the while my teeth were chattering and I was just hyperventilating. I don't remember much I just know someone had to help calm me down and it took a good 15 minutes. It was terrible. Has this happened to anyone, or does anyone know why this happened? I've never been like that before.
