Have you ever tried Absinthe? Does it really make you hallucinate? If you have tried it-What is your favorite?!

Question: I have, many kinds. The mayor gave some great information (no, it's not a drug and it won't make you hallucinate) so I'll just suggest some brands. My favorite a few years ago was White Fairy. The reason I say "a few years ago" is that some great brands have become available in the meantime thought I haven't tried them yet.

White Fairy is available here: http://www.absintheonline.com/acatalog/A... but if you're making an order now, I've heard great things about Duplais and the rest of the Jades (I've had the Nouvelle Orleans but there are more varieties now.) Most anything on that link will be great. Don't buy the Kubler from there if you're in the US, though, since it's available domestically without paying for shipping.

The two brands available in the US are Lucid and Kubler, so if you'd like to save a ton on shipping you can buy those from here: http://www.drinkupny.com/category_s/86.h... and in the US, shipping is free.

I tried it when I was in Prague where it is legal. I don't think it is legal anywhere else. It tastes like sweetened rocket fuel, but I didn't halucinate. I probably didn't have enough.

I've tried absinthe several times while backpacking around Europe. Most of the absinthe made nowadays is simply a very strong alcohol (up to 75%), but is not made with the psycoactive ingredient wormwood. You can find some brands made with wormwood if you lok hard enough, however they will be much more expencive than the normal bottles and the amount of wormwood added is not enough to cause serious halutionations. The high alcohol content in absynth makes it hard to drink enough to see anything along the lines of pink elephants or other such things, but it is an EXTREAMLY powerfull drink with a heady high unlike any other alcohol I've tried.

Not to be rude, but how many times per day can people ask the same question?

Yes, My roommate spent quite a small fortune importing "real" absinthe from the Czech Republic. I think is tastes like a**. Then again i hate anise. It doesn't make you hallucinate it just gets you really drunk. Here are a few interesting facts about it you may wish to know.

1. Absinthe of legend is a myth. The hallucinogenic effects of absinthe were created by the French wine industry. During the later part of the 1800's the grapes in France were almost wiped out by a plague. With the wine industry almost out of business they started a smear campaign against their largest rival. Absinthe.

2. Chemical testing on vintage bottles of absinthe purchase from various sources have revealed that they fall well within current US standards for the sale of absinthe and thujine (spelling?). Furthermore the same test revealed that in order to hallucinate off of absinthe one would already be dead from the alcohol.

3. Lucid brand absinthe is available in the US and was designed by the worlds leading expert in absinthe Ted (T.A.) Breax, who also designed Nouvelle-Orleans absinthe and sells it in France.
