How do you keep an opened bottle of wine from going bad?!

Question:

How do you keep an opened bottle of wine from going bad?

I drink lots of (mostly) red wine, but sometimes I can't polish off a whole bottle in a night. Should I put it in the frig to keep it fresh or just leave it out at room temperature? Any suggestions? I'd hate to waste the precious liquid!

I definitely recommend the vacuum pump. You can get a pump and 2 stoppers for about $15 and it works very well. We use this system in our wine shop to save our open tasting bottles overnight and it really helps preserve the flavor of the wine. In addition to using the pump, we refrigerate the wine (both red and white). This also helps preserve the wine and keeps its exposure to oxygen at a minimum. Just take the reds out of the fridge a couple of hours before serving if you can. If you don't want to invest in a pump system, you should at the very least refrigerate.

From personal experience...just leave it out at room temp, nothing happens to the wine... thats what my grandfather, and the rest of the family do..

fyi: great grandfather has a vineyard and produce wine, so i would i assume they know what they're doing...

I leave mine at room temp - it is usually good for a few days without doing anything except putting a stopper in it. I also have a wine vacuum that sucks out the air from the bottle - they are pretty cheap - around 15 bucks - and this will help it keep a little longer! Worth the small investment if you use it enough! Wine doesn't last too long in my house! LOL!

drink it

There is a small canister of gas you can get at a wine store that forms a protective coating on the surface of the wine.

I've heard to refrigerate it, but I've never had good luck doing that. So on those rare occasions when a bit remains, I just put a stopper in the bottle and leave it out at room temp.

You want to get a bottle vaccuum pump to get the air out of the botttle which will kepp the wine from going bad for a few weeks
