We just opened a bottle of white wine and it tastes like it's off...could it be spoiled?!

Question: It also is a bit fizzy.

Answers: It also is a bit fizzy.

ACTUALLY, wine can go bad. Some have expiration dates. Also this can happen when wine isn't stored properly. Usually it tastes like vinegar and the color may be off - usually orange/amber color.
If it doesn't taste right or if you're questioning how old it is... then, just toss it.

wine doesnt spoil, the alcohol kills bacteria, now, it could be that you're not used to the taste of it and it seems unfamiliar

It sounds like that. If the air gets through a leaky cork the wine can spoil so that is a leading cause of bad tastes when a wine is opened and sampled.

It is definitely a bad bottle. Can you return it? It shouldn't be fizzy unless it's a type of champagne (like Baby Duck). What make is it?

sure it could be throw it away so u don't get sick
sounds like poison (yuc)

oh what? the guy above is obviously not an informed wine drinker. wine DOES spoil of course. if it wasnt properly bottled it can turn to pretty much vinegar ewwww if it was a cheap wine i would just dump it and forget it but if it was a bit pricey id bring the entire bottle back to the store and let the manager taste it and exhange it for something else...chances are if he values his customers and is an honest guy he'll know its off as well

the wine could have been exposed to are somehow during the bottling process which can actually cause molding on the bottom of the cork if it is a corked bottle. you would also notice an unpleasant flavor. another factor in that is whether or not it was kept in a stainless steel holding tank or a wooden cask, the steel gives it a crisper flavor and the wood depending on the type would give it different flavors as well. if it was in fact held in wooden casks to age and is not gone bad then it could be that the wooden cask was a different type then your usual wines and you just aren't used to that particular flavor.

Yes, it could be spoiled.

If its a bit fizzy then that could indicate a problem.

(there are a few still wines that have a few bubbles , known as spritz, which are deliberate)

Hard to tell without knowing what it is and tasting it.

But supposing you were in a restaurant and the steak you ordered didn't taste right. You'd send it back, yes? Yo.u're not a beef farmer or a butcher or a chef but you know when something isn't right

Do the same. Stick the cork in the bottle, take it back to the shop. Just say to them -- "this didn't taste right, and it was fizzy -- what do you think?"

If they are a shop worth speniding your money in, you should get satisfaction.

The short answer is if it tastes "off", then it is probably bad. Check the cork, if its dry you have a good case for improper storage, if it crumbles and smells moldy you have a "corked wine". Under either circumstance, take it back regardless of price, you did not pay for crap!

Sounds like it was "corked", meaning that oxygen penetrated the cork and ruined the wine. If you believe this is the case, recork the bottle and take it back to the store where it was purchased. They will exchange it for you. Tip: it won't work if the bottle is empty. And, the question is moot if the bottle was sealed with a screw top.

On a personal note: death to screw tops.
