How do you set light to the Christmas pudding safely on Christmas Day and what alcohol do you use?!

Question: you use brandy, and the way to do it is this...

Heat your pudding beforehand (in a microwave, say) then pour the brandy on top and light it with a match. It burns but the flames are comparatively cool. Don't go sticking your fingers into the flames, but they're not going to set fire to the pudding itself. As long as you don't spill the burning brandy off the plate, it'll be fine. Let it burn out and then serve.

brandy and with a long match!!!!!

use a drop of brandy and if you want to be safe set light to it in a ladle and pour it over the pudding
only the alcohol is burned off

A tablespoonful of brandy, rum or whisky, warm the spoon underneath with a match.Slowly tilt the spoon over the burning match, the spirit will ignite and burn with a blue flame and can be gently poured over the pud-hic!

Heat a small amount of brandy in a pan set it alight then pour it over the pudding

I suggest Brandy. It flames at about 80C so if you are able to heat a small ladle full of brandy to this temperature before pouring it onto the pudding, it should ignite fairly easily.

Maybe it is easier to heat the ladle over a gas or spirit burner flame, rather than an electric plate. You can let the brandy catch fire in the ladle before pouring it flaming over the pudding.

Perhaps this might be a practical alternative method of heating it, which I have not tried before, but I wonder if it might be practical to heat the ladle in boiling water, then pour the brandy into the (now hot) ladle, and just holding the full ladle in the gently boiling water before pouring it on the pudding. You might, of course, need to light it with a match when it is on the pudding. Just a thought!

Good luck and be safe for Christmas.

Use brandy.

Brandy and it must be warm.
