Barolos and Barberescos are excellent. Almost all of them I have tried I enjoyed, but they can be pricey.
Barberas are rather spotty however. I try to stay away from them.
You can choose any of these Italian wines of your chioce that you like best.

It depends on your taste buds some people hate the ones that are supposed to be the best and some people love them.
Frascati - white - with cheese & grapes
Mateus - red - for sipping, and any meat or pasta dish.
It's good that everyone's taste differs, keeps all of the wineries in business.
i love australian reds. i am from australia . however , all the best australian wines are not sold in the u.s. i love wine from the hunter valley region , they have the best shiraz. 2003 was a great year for shiraz in the hunter region of australia. check it out online. it wont disappoint.
