I've heard that positive people say half full and negative people say half empty. I would venture to guess that indifferent people that something is half. Either way both are correct English, while merely saying half seems to leave a statement unfinished.

one needs to have more information to answer the ? . if the class was full and i drank 1/2 of it than it is 1/2 empty ,now, if the class is empty an i fill1/2 way ,then it is 1/2 full. so, in life one need as much knowledge as one can get be fore making such a deep answer.
