These one's are common, easy to find, and have a nice smooth flavor...they're also affordable:
Estancia Cabernet
Francis Ford Coppola Cabernet
Chatea St. Michelle Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon

Don't get anything less than $15

One wine I had that I loved was called 14 Hands Merlot. It is made in Washington. The price is very reasonable and under $15.

One Chardonnay that tastes good and is bound to get a few laughs is a French wine called Fat Bastard. You should find it in any packie.

A coppola claret should do the trick (and not too expensive)

Best Cabernet Savignon I had lately is Hall, Napa Valley 2002, which was outstanding ~$20. Two very good Zinfanels are Storrs Rusty Ridge, Santa Clara and La Storia each about $30. These prices are from the biggest liquor warehouse in Texas, where the blue laws continue to reign and the "sin" tax of about 30% has already been added before you touch the bottle and pay sales tax == triple taxation!!!

Right now I am drinking Layer Cake, Shiraz, Barossa Valley with a screw top and it is outta this world and was about $9 at the local grocery store. Tannins so s-o-f-t tannis you could cry! I thought with a gimmicky name like Layer Cake it would be a disappointment, but lotsa fruit, definitely a new world wine-bright and shiny. Dark plum, a hint of cherry, tobacco and a bouquet of violets=but you don't taste flowers!

I know you asked for reds, but I frequently surprise people with the unexpected; a Viognier with its bright flavors and florals on the nose. White Knight ~$30 is wonderful. This is a good white for both experienced palates and people who are new to wine.

If you want to impress with a value Chardonnay, you cannot go wrong with Chateau St. Jean. Big and rich, not too much oak-as many Calif chards are, then a medium finish which is rare for any white. At the end of the finish you will note a curry and cinnamon hint!

My last surprise suggestions are an off dry Reisling, which would go great with turkey, duck, goose, etc. If you are serving spicy food try a Gewurtraminer, the sweetness and spice are an antidote for spicy food, besides being a good pairing. Try a 'gavertz' with Thai food.

Hi, I absolutely love red wine. This is a nice and smooth red I found at BevMo...its called Allegrini Valpolicella Classico. Even my non-red wine drinking friends like this wine because it is so smooth. And its only about $14-16 a bottle. Hope this helps!

I like the 2004 Partners' Reserve Meritage from Lockwood Vineyard its not pricey about 20 bucks.
