Is it whiskey? Smolts?

Answers:
Bailey is technically right although she just plagerized wiki, but there is a lot more to this concoction. While made from distilled wine juice ...et al, it is a grape product in the alcohol scale and which also effects the way you drink it.
Example. Wine- drink normally, port/ sherry(fortified wine) larger sips, Brandy(distilled wine) special glass, smell and sniff and sip, congac (brandy liquer) special glass, very old and expensive. wiki these yourself
try to find info on the process from larger companies web sites.

brandy is a type of liquere that is produced slowly over a long time by fermining with sugar and fruit. not cooked like whiskey

I believe brandy is made from fermented fruit, such as grapes, not grain (which is what whiskey is made from).

Brandy is distilled wine - wine with most of the water removed - which changes the taste and makes the alcohol content higher.
Brandy is a spirit made by distilling grapes to a higher proof than they achieve as wine. Most brandy is made from actual grape wine, though some may also be made from the pulpy mixture of stems and seeds left after grapes are pressed, and some is made from the fermented juices of fruits other than grapes. The name brandy is a shortening of the Dutch word brandewijn, which means “fire wine”.

Brandy is a glorious fire coloured liquid that dances over the ice cubes in the glass warms the mouth and charms the throat thats before it's even hit you properly. It goes to your head and makes the world seem all warm and sweet and all you'll want to do is drink more and more.
It's a hypnotist in a bottle.
It's also a poison. Thats why I dont drink any more.
But when I did, I was a brandy person.
Nearly killed me, but I was hooked on it.
But I still think it looks beautiful in the glass :)

Brandy is the commonly used term for distilled wine. Brandy distilled in certain regions may have specific designations like "Cognac," or "Armagnac."

Brandy, more generally, is any spirit that's distilled from fermented fruit. However, if it's any fruit other than grapes, the name of the fruit is included, such as: apple brandy, blackberry brandy, apricot brandy, etc.
Similar to the certain grape brandies, certain fruit brandies have specific names due to unique locations or processes, such as: "Calvados" (a Spanish apple brandy) or "Poire William" a specific pear brandy.
