Its all a matter of taste, you can spend hundreds of dollars and think what you bought tastes like crap. So instead I'll give you a brief summary by style and key brand:
Scotch whiskies can go from very pale to dark brown in color. The taste range can be a light, very slight sweet, slight smokey clean finish to an ultra harsh peaty burnt wood, stays on the palate one. Mid- range is essentially leaning toward the lighter in term of popularity.
Brands to consider:
Johnnie Walker: All Blends(not a bad thing), Red- 4 yr old, harsh, peaty, Black 12 yrs, my fav. very smooth, slight smoke, slight sweet, clean finish, gold-15 yrs, slight sweet, very clean, almost dainty, green blend of 100% malts, vatted, exc. intro to single malts, a hidden gem, right in the middle, blue very pricey- ego trip only.
Chivas Regal- exc. qual. 12 yr blend a bit more smoke than black, nice finish, needs water to tone down. 15 yr old, can drink neat, very fine clean finish, nice balance of smoke and sweet.
Single Malts come from one distillery only and like blends can be very light or as harsh as God knows what! No neutral grain spirits added.
For a beginner, Dalwhinnie is the easiest to acclimate to, very slight sweetness, amber color, slight smoke and won't break the wallet @ say $50.
The Glenlivet is another quality brand around the same price, but noticably sweeter, very smooth, a bit more smoke and peat flavor.
Cardu is the heart of all Johnnie Walker blends, sells for about $55-$60. It is what gives JWB its intensity.
SInce there are hundreds of brands, go to the web and key in blended scotch whisky and single malts. A hundred pages will come up. I'm afraid I am giving my predjudiced view. Do the same for American Whiskies, all others are trash.

I dont know about "Best"...but my fave whisky is Jamesons Irish Whisky.

jameison, i had some in cork and carnt stop drinking it now i,m back in oz

white label is 'hot'.

There isn't a "best". It's just what you like best.
My favourite is J&B.
Cheers!

I love Jameson, but I also enjoy Red Breast which is also a very good Irish whiskey.

What kind of whiskey? I'm partial to Bourbon and Tennessee whiskeys myself - I find them sweeter and smoother than whiskeys from the British isles. Maker's Mark is a good major brand. There are several small batch brands that make excellent whiskeys. Check your local packie (that's packie as in package store, not Pakistani).

well what type of whiskey? Scotch, rye, bourban, irish whisky?? Depends on your prefrence and wallet!!!

I really love Crown Royal. I think what is best is how you taste and what you think tastes good. The fun is trying each one.
