Great question. First off, Metaxa is going to be a much harder sell than the typical Cognac, it is infused with both Muscat wines and various herbs, so it is definitely an acquired taste. It is, however, due to its difficulty to locate, very sought after.

Here is the bad news, your bottle is worth only around $40.00-$50.00. A 1915 bottle, despite how collectible its age is, is fairly common. I've seen bottles identical to yours in every way sell for only around 30.00.

As for why the 7 star sold for so much; it is either a fake auction, you see those very often on eBay, or the bottle had some outrageously rare fluke vintage. There is no reason that a 7 star Metaxa would sell for that much more than a 5 star. All the stars mean, is that that specific bottle was aged for that many years in a cask before it was bottled. Metaxa goes up to 12 and 17 stars, the rarest of which, are vintaged.

My recommendation; hold on to it. It could skyrocket in value in the future since Metaxa is no longer in mass production and no longer even labeled Metaxa. Since 1980, after it was bought out by Grand Metro, Metaxa is now labeled as Diageo. If you purchased it for anywhere from $30.00-$60.00, you got a fair deal, a great conversation piece, and a potentially solid investment :)

Good luck to you!
