Is it possible to be an Alcoholic without ever drinking?
Just wondering...

Is it possible that this is the stupidest question I've read this week?
no
You can have the gene that makes you likely to have addiction problems, but it needs a trigger. My uncle and his ex-wife were both alcoholics. Neither of their sons have ever had alcohol for fear that they also would become alcoholics since clearly that was an issue in my step-grandfather's family. Both are now near 30 with no problems. The Twins studies also showed twins that were raised apart often both became alcoholics. So, yes, I think you can be.
Now, this is different from someone addicted to the habit of drinking (such as a social drinker).
I dont drink anymore but I still consider myself an alcoholic because I know if I had more than three or four drinks I would (possibly) slide back into addiction. So even now Im not dependant on drink (havent been for two years), I would still say, yes, you can still be an alcoholic - if something goes wrong and I get stressed and I think I need a drink to deal with it, I push it aside but thats the alcoholic in me talking. So yes, in my case, but if someones never had a drink they cant know if they have the potential to be addicted to it because they've never tried it.
I think the answer is probably no but you can certainly be genetically predisposed to alcoholism. If in doubt, just don't drink. Why put yourself in the situation where you have to fight an addiction the rest of your life. Believe me, you won't be missing a lot by not drinking.

alcohol can enter your system through intravenous (although i don't see why anyone would do that) so to answer your question, yes it is technically possible.
