You can buy beer at 16 but you must be 18 to buy liquor.
For the id, its depends on the stores. If you don't look too young, generally it's ok.

I tried doing a search on the age but came up with nothing. England's is 18 but is trying to raise it to 21. I would assume that France's is too.
Actually in Europe you can drink alcohol at any age when accompanied by a parent or guardian. It's sixteen to go into a bar alone, and I believe its eighteen to purchase.
I think its 16 years of age, I'm not to sure.
