Would a 2002 grgich hills Merlot be considered a good collectible wine?!

Question: I have a 2002 Grgich Hills Merlot and was wondering if it's considered a good collectible wine. And would it be worth anything like in 10 years?

Hi There Baby,

Wine Spectator gave the 2002 Grgich Hills Merlot 82 points and says that it's a "drink now". This typically means that the wine will not hold up in the cellar and should be consumed within a year after marketing.

If it were mine, I'd enjoy it over a nice pasta dinner in the next few months. : )

2002 wasn't a bad year nor was it a great year for red wine in the region. Ratings from publications are subjective (remember, wineries and companies pay for advertising in those publications, so why wouldn't they receive a decent rating) but I'd say from experience that I wouldn't hold on to the bottle for much longer. It is a drier type of wine, so it will hold up a little longer. I'd enjoy it with a nice steak and share it with someone within the next year or so. Hope this is helpful.
