Really good margaritas use really good tequilas. You should make sure to use a blanco or reposado tequila that is 100% agave (cuervo and sauza and the cheap stuff is only 51%). El Tesoro, Herradura or Milagro are common brands that are all excellent choices. Here is the ratios you need to mix:

6 parts tequila
3 parts fresh squeezed lime juice (it must be fresh squeezed- the canned stuff will taste like crap)
1-1.5 parts agave nectar (similar to honey or a simple sugar syrup, made from the same plant as tequila)

Mix together and serve over ice. The agave nectar might be hard to find as most liquor stores don't carry it. You might have to check some higher end grocery stores to find it. This type of margarita really lets the tequila flavors come out without dulling them by having some kind of orange liquor (ie triple sec) present.

best is a Cadillac margarita and despite what people tell you, you got to pour it on the rocks.
salt the rim of your glass,
add ice
1 to 1 1/2oz of good tequila (patron would be best)
4oz margarita mix
1oz Grand Marnier

Ice cubes
3 ounces tequila
2 ounces freshly squeezed lime juice
1 ounce Simple Syrup, recipe follows
1/2 to 1 teaspoon orange liqueur
1 tablespoon Lime-salt-sugar, recipe follows

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add tequila, lime juice, and Simple Syrup. Cover and shake until mixed and chilled, about 30 seconds. (In general, the drink is ready by the time the shaker mists up.) Place Lime-salt-sugar on a plate. Press the rim of a chilled rocks or wine glass into the mixture to rim the edge. Strain margarita into the glass.

Just use Joe Crow
triple sec and lime juice.
This drink was named for rita hayworth a movie star of years gone by. The best ratio for a Margarita is 3:2:1. Three parts Tequila, 2 parts Cointreau, and 1 part freshly squeezed lime juice.
1 1/2 oz tequila
1/2 oz premium triple sec (preferably Cointreau)
1 oz lime juice

Rum the rim of a cocktail glass with lime juice, and dip in salt. Shake all ingredients with ice, strain into the glass, and serve.
3 parts tequila
2 parts triple sec
1 partfresh squeezed lime juice
ice
coarse salt
Salt the rims of 2 large margarita glasses. To do so, pour salt onto a small plate, moisten the rims of the glasses on a damp towel and press them into the salt.
In a blender combine tequila, triple sec and limeade concentrate.add some ice cubes. Blend until smooth. Pour into glasses, garnish with slice of lime and serve.

An original margarita only consists of tequila, lime juice and triple sec. But I make mine with Jose Cuervo and Cuervo Margarita mix, and it taste fine. You can serve it over ice, or blend it. If you like to use salt on the rim, fine, I don't. Also adding a fresh squeeze of lime is typical. The amount of tequila really depends on you. I like mine 1/2 and 1/2.
