Should I nip and buy cigarettes?!

Question: I've not really smoked for 6 weeks (which I'm quite proud of...yeaaaahhhh, although I've had a couple when tipsy) I really fancy some now, maybe only 1 after a couple of drinks tonight, I will definitely give up properly for the new year, could i buy one packet, have 1 and give the rest to my friends tomorrow night, they are smoking but are also quitting for new year

The craving for cigarettes when drinking is attributed to the expansion of blood vessels which cigarettes tend to contract. The contraction causes a good feeling which is interpreted as the enjoyment of the cigarettes which in fact is a fallacy.
If you can enjoy a cigarette without the habitual use of them then there is no problem. Addiction of any substance is a problem whether it be drugs, food, coffee, nicotine, gambling or sex, the problem starts when the habit never ends.
The fact is that it's not about the substance but about the personality that is out of control. People tend to become obsessed with their habit to the point of self destruction. Life is about enjoyment and so if you can enjoy something without it killing you then you are safe. Worrying about things kills more people every year than cigarettes. The side affects of worry is stress, ulcers, depression, neurological disorders and numerous other health related issues. When they say laughter is the best medicine it's no joke.

Be Safe and have a Happy New Year!!
Personal Confession:
I smoked cigarettes when I was 9 years old and smoked grass at 12 with the addition of Barbiturates and Amphetamines soon after. I tripped on LSD at 16 and had a wild and crazy childhood. When I went to Woodstock I had pre-rolled half a pound and had a dozen tabs of orange sunshine in my pocket plus some opiated hashish for the down time. It was a tumultuous time and somehow I made it through. I don't answer questions here because it's fun or for the points but because I know that there are others just like me that are going through a time in their lives when they need to know that someone understands.
I graduated from puberty and went on to develop my mind and get a grip on life and the understanding of it. So I'm here for a short time to play in the Yahoo Q&A arena. My profile explains very simply that I'm here to help but sometimes I just get in a non serious mood and just want to have fun. Maybe tonight I will view this year in retrospect and I will drink a bottle of wine and have a cigarette or two and enjoy every minute of it knowing that I am the master of my life and not the wine or the cigarette. I hope that you can get a grip and others can learn to control their habits before their habit controls them. Happy New Year to You and all of the Yahoo Community!
Burp!
If you really want to quit and it is "Your Will" then "You Will".

no

No! It's a disgusting habit! Keep it up!

No, no, no, no, no!
Just have another drink instead!!

No, don't do it, buy yourself some chocolate or something instead for being a good girl and staying off the fags.

Nip out now and buy 20. Mmmmmmmm lovely fags, mmmmmmmmm inhale. Don't give in to the sandal wearing clowns who say smoking is bad for you, non smokers die everyday!! Quick grab a ciggie now and enjoy the buzz that only nicotine can provide.

No. . .don't buy cigarettes. . .you'll get addicted again. . .don't think of smoking. . .

New years resoloution don't have to start on a specific date it's about noticing something you are not to found of about yourself which you would be better off doing or not in this case. You should really do this kind of thing through out the year.

So show everyone up and say im starting mine early and don't.

Plus do you really want to go all the way down there just so you can stand outside in the cold. no ta.

Go Ahead And Kill Yourself Then

No!!!! Seriously, if you want to quit do it now. You're doing so good so far - 6 weeks. You are just making excuses. That one cigarette will lead to another, and another, and another. Before you know it you will be a full time smoker again. You got the will power - resist the temptation!!!

Yuck smoking makes me sick!! Dont do it otherwise you'll be back to square 1. All that effort down da drain!!

No... I had given up once for 6 weeks and i thought i could handle just the one. Now 8 years on I'm still smoking. Gonna have a crack at it for new year

In my opinion, if you are going to set a concrete date to quit smoking, like the first day of 2008, then you have to indulge in your habit without regret until that day, so that you dont crave it so much when you first start. That will be the hardest time, the beginning. So relax, have fun, and share the pack of cig's with your friends, then give it up and make a commitment to stop.

Good Luck!
MJ

NO. But should you fold keep the pack as its easier to deal with if you know theres some there JUST IN CASE like a safety blanket. Craving seems worse if you know theres none around.

no don't do it you will feel sorry in the morning

You should stop now. Period.

It's good that you've stopped for 6 weeks. But if you say, "Maybe after the new year, I'll stop." You're going to say next year, "I'll stop smoking as soon as THIS happens." And you'll never stop. So you should just stop as soon as possible =)

The sooner you quit, the easier it'll be :D:D

Ok then make it one last pack before the new year. But make a more serious attempt for new year. If you need help ASK FOR IT! Your doctor or pharmacist are only too willing to help you. Your current efforts that have reduced your smoking are very admirable.

I wouldn't do it. Little freebies like that are what made it so hard for me to quit smoking in the first place. You have crossed over the hard part, do you really want to start the process all over again? Six weeks is a serious accomplishment and it's going to take time for the cravings to subside. But believe me, they will. I haven't smoked in almost four years and I'm completely over it...but it took a while. I remember dreaming about smoking for months afterward and being in a situation, such as drinking (which always made me want to smoke more) and having to take a break from the part of my life until I got it under control.

But you need to look at smoking in the same way that you look at an alcoholic. When an alcoholic gives up drinking, they can't ever have a drink again because it can start the addiction back up. It's the same with smoking. One cigarette leads to another one and another one and so on and so forth.

Be proud of the progress you have made. Why wait until New Years? Those resolutions don't hold up any better than the ones made before it or after. Give yourself another reward...but don't let it be a cigarette. You deserve better than that.

Hi, I read that if everyone stopped smoking, it would cost the government £25 billion pounds in lost tax. Sure in a few years time there would be less cost to the NHS re smoking, but then on average people would live longer, so more cost to the tax payer overall.

In the short term to cover the loss of revenue, the government would need to find £25 billion, that's pushing £1000 per income tax payer, per year. I do not want to pay anymore tax, income tax, car tax, VAT, stamp duty, etc etc thank you very much. In the loner term, the government would raise the retirement age {for men} to 67, 70, or above.

I'd like to retire long b4 I'm 60 - still 2 decade 2 go mind !!

The average male life span in my family {parents / grandparents generation} is 61, so If i retired at 60, I'd have a gap year, between finishing work and death.

Its fantastic that smoking has been banned in public enclosed spaces, yep, but more tax for us none smokers as a result - no thanks.

So in short, yes please buy a box, make sure UK duty paid please, get {re} hooked and keep on lighting up in 2008 and beyond. Keeps the fire service busy too !!

Cheers.

No, think bad breathe, clothes stinking of it and in your hair.. i am a lucky 1.. 2 and i half years ago, 1 morning i got up and decided to give up..
