How do they get the cork in the bottle?!

Question: I was looking at the corks in wine bottles and the cork is so much bigger than the opening of the bottle, how do they get it in there in the first place? is the bottle made around the cork?

There's a lot of air space in a cork. When I cork wine, I boil the corks, compress them to a smaller diameter, then press from the top, forcing the cork into the bottle. Just in case you care, boiling softens the cork and kills some of the bacteria that could spoil the wine. The water also serves as a lubricant.

No... we use a corker... it's a levered device that compresses the cork, then pushes it into the bottle...

Here are a few different styles that are common among homebrewers...

When the cork is first placed in the bottle it is small and dry. It is moistened by the liquid in the bottle causing it to swell, making a tight fit.
