Single-malt Scotch is an affectation; the Scots themselves blend it so that the strengths and weaknesses of different single-malts cover one another. In Scotch, I prefer a standard Chivas Regal.
If you want Bourbon, anything from Nelson County, Kentucky, USA is superior (Heaven Hill, Evan Williams)--I guess it's the water.
As regards American, Candadian, Irish, or Rye whiskeys, I don't think there's much difference among the leading brands.
