I feel like I have to have a drink every night?!

Question: Does anyone else have this problem? I don't get drunk. I just feel like I can't go to bed without having two or sometimes three small glasses of wine. Every day I say to myself 'I'm not gonna have a drink tonight' and every night I have it anyway. I don't feel like I am an alcoholic. But, I guess if needing alcohol means that I am then maybe I am. But, I just don't want to keep going like this forever. I don't know how to quit. It calms my nerves and helps me sleep. Anyone else have this problem?

Meggan is this you?! You sound exactly like an old friend...

First of all, too much alcohol is not good for your body/brain, certainly not on a nightly basis. You have become dependant on a substance. That is the definition of addiction.

You need a healthy alternative. Exercise, tea, a bath will all help you sleep better and get to sleep faster and will be good for you. You need to learn to deal with your anxiety/stress in a different way.

Hey! You're an alcoholic. You're addicted to booze.

AA Meetings are held all over the place, all the time. Look into it if you want to help yourself out.

I have that problem....but I cant stop at one. I cant stop til I paas out. I have not drank in to weeks and hope to stay dry. The first week is the hardest. I quit for 3 months last winter

soon it will be 3 then 4 then 5..etc...if you have to have it then you have a problem. never drink by yourself anyways. give it up!

Maybe you are an alcoholic, maybe you're not. It definitely sounds like you're dependent, though. Have you tried getting rid of ALL the alcohol in the house? Every drop - beer, wine, booze, all of it. Can you do that?

Talk to your doctor. He/she may have some suggestions. Otherwise, look up the local chapter of AA. And then call them, and attend.

It's just a habit. You do that every night because that is what you are used to doing every night. Find a different drink to reward yourself with. Have a cup of mint tea, or a cup of hot chocolate. Within a week or so, you will be used to your new habit. Good luck.

I drank for years, then quit. The hardest thing was breaking the habit of doing what I had always done.

Now it's a habit. Nip it in the bud before it's addiction.
Add something new to your routine like a workout or a walk to unwind.

I'm guessing you have a problem and are not being that honest with yourself, mind something else to help calm you before bed or whatever, find the proper help with the alcohol.

Melissa, you are an alcoholic. When you can't stop or control what you drink, there is a problem. Do not feel bad about yourself. I can tell you know you need help and this is very good. I suggest finding a local chapter to alcoholics anonymous and attend a meeting. You'll get support and the tools you need to beat this addiction. Also, never underestimate the power and prayer. My dad and my very good friend are alcoholics but I'm happy to say they are both functioning normally today without alchohol thanks to the help they've received through counseling.

wow! thats so weird..

NOT
its called an alcholic smart one

go to AA meetings

There is nothing wrong with it. As long as you are not getting drunk - you are fine. Everybody has a different way of unwinding.

I definitely know from what you are describing that it can get worse real fast pretty soon the few drinks at night won't be helping like they used to and then you will need more. I would definitely suggest getting some help or counseling about it and why you need to calm your nerves etc. Good luck and God bless.

Europeans drink one He$$ of a lot wine per day than three small glasses.

Three normal glasses per night is fine; if you drink red, your blood will be much better for the effort.

Do not associate this with some pseudo-moral BS. Wine is the preferred drink of the gods, honor them by drinking what they drink.

I have also never been drunk, don't like beer (except Hefeweizen) and don't like hard liquor but red wine is good for you (if you're not pregnant). So, sally forth and build good blood in the bargain.
