Why is it that some people don't get alcohol poisoning?!

Question: Although I don't drink quite as much any more, 20 beers in one sitting at the most these days... in the past I was a heavy drinker. One night for example, I drank what worked out to a little over a sixty, as a mix of rum, whiskey and vodka... I only weight about 180, and I was a bit lighter then... so why did I not have alcohol poisoning. I've also drank fourty pounders to myself on multiple occasions, with nothing worse then a hangover the next day... so whats the deal? does alcohol poisoning not apply to some people?

Just as people metabolize food at different rates, the same goes for the metabolization of alcohol. One 150 pound man may be wasted after a twelve pack and another may be able to drink all night. Different folks, different strokes and all that jazz. You have just been blessed by the goddess of wine, I guess. Good luck!

The reason is that you have a tolerance for alcohol.Just like having to increase the number of pills you have to take to get the same effect.the more often you consume alcohol the more it takes to get the same effect.

your body has become adapted to the alcohol intake that you have had in the past , so if you drink often, and a lot it will take a lot more and more as time preogresses because you are not a stranger to it. like me with spicy food, something that is spicy to some people is not to me, i get some hot feeling in my mouth but just a bit, i keep adding more and more i almost can't tell what hot is and what is not. same with you. i say you cut back on alcohol though, that is way too much , your liver is going to give out.

some people have a higher tolerance and it doesn't effect people the same....but trust me drinking that heavy will evidentually take a tole on your body and your life....

when you drink alot for a long period of time your body developes a "tolerence" for liquor, the body adjusts it's metabolism to handle whatever you induce to it.

my mom has had over 20 beers in one night..and she is stillve alive and kicking..::knock on wood::

Yeah, like I can't really get drunk with beer anymore. I get full before I get more than a small buzz.

Alcohol poisoning applies to ALL people......depending on a lot of factors. At the time, you may have been considered smaller, however if you were lean muscle mass and not fat, it would have taken longer for your body to metabolise the alcohol. Other factors involved can include the amount of food you consumed whilst drinking which slows down the absorbtion of alcohol and the amount of water you consumed also, which would have lessened the dehydration of the body. How long was one sitting? if it was somthing like 6 hours or more then you are spacing out the amount of alcohol that is being absorbed into the body so for example 20 beers over 6 hours is about 3.5 beers per hour. I too find that i can drink alot too, alot more than my other female peers as for one i have more muscle on my body than theirs. Also if you drank often and lots, your body becomes used to the amount you drink, although your liver sure doesnt!! Its probably a good thing you dont drink that way anymore, and also probably lucky that you didnt get alcohol poisoning.
