Is hard liquor fattening?!


Question: Can drinking hard liquor fairly often cause someone to gain weight? I usually drink brown liquor, usually rum (i.e. Bacardi Select Black), and I drink it straight.

How about some actual research, people? I remember a few years back from my intro to human nutrition class I read something about this topic. Yes, alcohol has a lot of calories and absolutely no nutrition; however, numerous studies have shown that despite this caloric intake, no correlation has been shown between alcohol and weight gain. Subjects who took their normal diet and added alcohol showed no weight gain, while subjects who replaced calories from food with alcohol showed weight LOSS.

I sold that text a long time ago so I can't quote it verbatim, but I was able to find a similar study at Oxford Journals. It states:

"Prospectively, both men and women drinkers tended to gain less weight than did nondrinkers (p = 0.006 for trend in women, p = 0.11 for trend in men). Drinkers also had more stable weight over the 10-year follow-up period. Drinkers were less likely to have major weight gain or loss (gaining or losing ≥10 kg) than were nondrinkers."

It also goes on to say that men and women who drank two or more alcoholic beverages a day actually showed greater odds of weight loss than those who didn't drink at all.

It kind of bugs me seeing people answering these questions without actually knowing what they're taking about. Go do research on stuff like this, don't ask 10 year-olds with internet access.

Yes--it has calories and so can be fattening. And if you drink too much, you won't feel like working out or eating heathily, so you'll gain wait.

it is dead calories. it contains no fat and little carbs unless it is a sweetened liquor. Too much nad a poor diet can make you gain weight.

No, Beer and Liquor do not have fat in them you can not gain weight from them.. It's what you eat once you are hammered drunk thats what makes you gain weight just remember that.

All liquor has calories. An ounce and a half of liquor(a shot) has 100 calories, same with four ounces of wine(a glass) and a beer usually has atleast 150 and sometimes more.

Drinking anything in access can make you gain weight...not to mention its bad for you to drink in access anyways

Well, it may not seem to be terribly fattening but it is empty calories. But I'd be more worried about the effects on my liver than weight gain to be honest!

Most liquor is fattening, because it is basically fermented sugar, and it also messes with your metabolism.
Usually excessive beer can make you fat while excessive wine can make you skinny, but in general, any liquor messes with your body's natural functioning. So if you're really worried about your weight, ditch these unnecessary calories.

Liquor has a lot of calories in it. If you drink a lot, you are consuming a lot of calories, which makes one fatter.

There is no fat in liquor (in most cases), but there are calories. No more than in a small glass of orange juice though, and most people would not consider orange juice fattening, would they.
It just comes down to quantity. Moderation will not cause any weight gain, unless you are incapable of exercise.

absolutely.. Hard liquors or any liquors has empty calories that don't covert into energy and contributes as fats!! It's harder to burn though..

A single ounce of vodka or rum (80 proof or 40% alcohol by volume) is roughly 70 calories. If you have a few shots, that's like an entire meal.

Cream liquors like Bailey's Irish Cream really pack it on though. An ounce of that is roughly 110 calories, which means if you have a whole 8-oz glass, that's 880 calories! That's tremendous, considering an average 5'6, 130 lb woman should have about 2000 calories a day... that's like half her calorie intake for the day.

Consume large quantities of sugar in any form (booze or soda), and you'll pack-on the pounds. However, if you're drinking more than a shot or two a night, you might want to either cut back, or start going to AA meetings.

in most cases it is. most people, like me, eat enough food for the day and drink on top of that. you body prioritizes the booze first to be burned. all night long your body tries to eliminate the sauce, so when you go to sleep, it stores everything else as FAT.

p.s. i wouldn't recommend eating less and drinking the same amount...

Yes it is fattening. Vodka has the smallest amount of calories
