Answers: as example -chateau talbot 4eme grand cru classe
chateau dauzac, 5eme grand cru classe margaux
and how you pronaunce it

In English it is said as 'Fourth Growth' , 'Fifth Growth', etc, or the word 'cru' pronounced 'crew' is used. In French you would use the French words, e.g. Quatrièmes Crus for a fourth growth.

It refers to the wine's placing in the 1855 classification.

In 1855 the best wines of the Medoc in Bordeaux were classified in 5 groups according to their prices and quality. This 1855 Classification is still used today and roughly holds true to the quality and price of the wines.

There has only ever been one change in positions, when Chateau Mouton Rothschild was elevated from second growth to first by Presidential decree in1973. Some changes due to wineries going out of business or merging with others has happened and there are now 61 chateaux in the classification

The (now 5) first growths (in French, Premiere Crus) are

Chateau Lafite-Rothschild
Chateau Latour
Chateau Mouton-Rothschild
Chateau Margaux
Chateau Haut-Brion

for some background on the classification and a list of all the Chateaux see http://www.thewinedoctor.com/regionalgui...

It means 4th or 5th, in French.

In 1855 Bordeaux was classified into different growths from 1st growth (premier cru) to 5th growth. The theory is that the higher growths are the better ones and the 5th growths are the lesser. There are many great 5th growths and 4th growths that in my opinion are very very delicious.
