What's the deal with those silly rubber cork's most wine bottles now have?!
Ive been through 3 cork screws since my favourite brand has changed to those ridiculous rubber thing's that won't come out !
Answers: Is it some sort of health and safety issue or are they just trying to keep us from opening them ?

Originally, they thought that it was cheaper to seal a bottle with these composite corks but it turned out to cost them more in bad wine than the original (wooden) corks. There is a problem with them running out of cork from the cork trees but it is still quite a ways down the road. They also thought there was a fungus that could attach itself to the cork which is one of the big reasons why a lot of wineries switched to the composite corks but in reality, cork taint affects less than 2% of the worlds annual production of wine.
The composite corks were supposed to prevent air from getting in and reduce the risk of oxidization but some of the original composite corks actually had the opposite effect leaving more wine oxidized. Needless to say, there were a lot of reasons why wineries made the switch but, when it comes down to it, if you want a corkscrew that will stand up to them, invest a little bit of extra money in a good quality, sturdy cork screw and you won't have a problem. I have definitely found some of these corks to be more stiff in the neck of the bottle than wooden corks but I've always managed to get them out with a little more muscle and I have yet to break any of my more expensive corkscrews.
They cost ten time less than the real cork dear....

They are supposed to last longer and be more effective at preventing oxidation of your wine than the traditional cork. Try getting a butterfly wine opener. Once you do, you'll never go back.
Bad economics. All I can say....
The rubber corks are impervious to air, and keep a bottle of wine from getting "corked." If you have ever tasted a corked bottle of wine, count yourself lucky.
I have had a couple of bottles like that and it is HORRIBLE. Tasted like modeling glue to me.

I haven't had to open any, but I have seen them--I thought it looked like a good idea-- I hate cork pieces in my drink - perhaps you can ask someone working there if there is a better way to open this particular type of bottle. Good luck,,,
oh i hate those things too! during our last trip to wine country, we were told that the rubber corks supposedly keep the wine better, blah blah blah, something about taste, etc. But I don't notice any difference except the pain of trying to get the stupid things out of the bottle.
Neither health or safety. It's for the price and taste. Rubber corks are cheaper than traditional cork, and it's supposed to keep the flavor of wine better. However, the best wines, according to recent studies, are the ones with screw tops and no cork at all. These are supposed to keep the flavors the best; and it's cheaper for the wine bottlers. AND...you won't need a corkscrew ;)
Hiya xx Happy New Year to you!! xx Ooh I know what you mean about these ridiculous things - they are sooo annoying xx I think they may have changed because they are cheaper to manufacture than cork, and also don't leave bits in the wine. But theyre no damn good if you cant actually GET IN to your bottle of wine to drink it!! xx I'd share a glass with you only I can't open the blasted thing :o) lol xx
Are you trying to drink shampane? Okay get someone whos strong enough to pop it open,BUT be careful or it will splash right out of the bottle.

I have heard because of this trend and that of dry erase boards that the cork industry is suffering greatly.
I would say that they are likely less expensive...or its that they will never come apart into tiny pieces as the reason why its changed. I would say mention this to the store where you but it as well as writing the company to tell them how you feel. You may also want to get other wine lovers to do the same.

We're saving the cork trees. I agree I hate those new plastic corks!...........................
thay are made to perserve the tast of you wine, and the best way to get them out is with the old colk opening, or shack first to stwer up the flaver than put the colk in and gentle push the colk down in it.
I like them, the cork always comes out clean.
Cork can induce oxidation and spoil the wine. This phenomenon is aptly called "corking". Rubber "corks" are being used to avoid this. I agree with you though. There's nothing like real cork.
I think it should just be a screw top- a lot easier! But keep the cork for champage :)
Sorry I can't help you as I don't drink wine, I prefer real ale.
