What do u enjoy nibbling with wine?!


Question: My husband and I have a "wine & cheese" night every Sunday, which has evolved to include much more than wine and cheese. While cheese and crackers are perfect nibbling food with most wines, there is a lot more snacks that are well suited.

Fruit & Wine
Which is tricky... Beringer has this to say:

"Some thoughts on pairing fruit with wine: If you are a food-and-wine pairing purist, you probably already know that pairing fruit and wine can be a challenge. Beringer's Executive Chef, David Frakes, suggests that in an ideal fruit and wine pairing, one should consider that the sweeter a fruit is, the sweeter a wine should be that is paired with it. On the flip side of this dynamic, the more acidic a fruit is (for instance, most pineapple) the more of a softening affect the fruit is going to have on a wine."

I myself think that sometimes it is fun to try the fruits that you taste in the wine with the wine and experiment with how the flavors match.

Meat & Wine
You can't go wrong here with red wines. The fleshy texture of meat (cold cuts, sausage) pairs well with fleshy reds like Merlots and Cabs. If you saute up some steak bites with a BBQ dip, you could do a Syrah or a Zinfandel. Or mix up some meat with some earthy mushrooms and it goes perfect with pinot. Doesn't have to be a dinner entree, just some nibble-able meat.

Chocolate & Wine
While some people go ga ga over Port and chocolate, we love the way dark chocolate goes with Cabernet and other bold reds. We aren't the only ones. Definitely a pleasant combination to nibble on. J Lohr Cabernet is a good chocolate wine, but there are many others. Sometimes we like to experiment with things like chocolate orange, chocolate raspberry, different levels of darkness to chocolate to see what matches best. There are even kits you can get that are designated chocolate levels for different wines, but I personally love Lindt bars.

A no brainer combo. You can look at all sorts of pairing guides here.

You don't have to do pairing with nibbing. But I find it a fun way to experiment with flavors while you are munching away, watching a moving, enjoying your wine. Sometimes you can stumble upon a cool combo that nobody thought of.

I'm nuts about nuts.

depends on the wine, but wheat toasteds with sharp cheddar are my fave and then a mix of cream cheese smoked salmon and red onion on a bagel or crackers.....when I'm feeling decadent

ANY kind of cheese...sharp cheddar, smoky cheddar, Gouda, baked brie, Havarti, etc. Crackers are good too, but you GOTTA have the cheese. I also like a mediterranean tray with olives, feta cheese, pita wedges, roasted red peppers, hummus, etc. Yum, now I'm hungry and thirsty for some wine!!

I love serving off-the-wall wine and food pairings. Chosen to pair well together but also with the OMG factor too.

Sharp cheddar and dill pickles with an Erhenfelsr.
Cheese Pleasers (cheese puffs) with Champagne.
Fruit with white wine
Sparkling Shiraz with turkey dinner.
All great combos
