Will a bottle of the best champagne, kept in a cupboard for 15 years still be fit to drink?!

Question: "The Best" champagnes can be stored for an extended period of time, and while the taste will change, it's often not for the worse.

However, keeping a bottle in a cupboard for 15 years is not exactly optimal storage conditions. The fluxuations of temperature and humidity in the house will likely have harmed the cork and/or the wine itself. And if the bottle was kept upright, it's probable that the cork has dried out, which would ruin the wine.

A few years back, I had a 1975 vintage bubbly and it was interesting. Drinkable, but the quality suffered. And this bottle was stored in actualy wine caves at the correct temperature.

I had a 1992 vintage last year and it was spectacular. But it was a top quality bubbly, properly stored.

In short, there isn't enough information to tell you if that bottle would be ok. It would depend on

The Vintage
The Quality (name of wine would tell us)
Temperature of storage locale
Humidity of storage locale
Position of bottle storage (vertical vs. horizontal)

Hope this helps.

If it's been on it's side so that air can't get in. If it's just standing straight up, probably not.

Probably not. But open it up and give it a try.

Hell yeah!

champagne, unlike wine, is not meant to be kept for years. Better drink it right away.

Kept in a cupboard it will be slowly ruined and undrinkable in less than a year. Wine, including Champagne, needs to be kept cool (55 deg F) is ideal. Kept a proper temperature, fine Champagne often is best after 20 years or so bottle age, depending on the style.

No, its not wine sir

I doubt it but I'd like to be there when you open it. Happy Drinking

Probably not - it doesn't mature like red wine

Probably not. But cool it, open it and try it. I hope I'm wrong.

No the Champagne wont taste very nice i know this from experience last year my parents decided to open a bottle of champagne that had been un-opened for 37years when we tried it, it wasn't a pleasent experience

I wouldn't if i were you. A friend of mine kept a bottle of Bollinger for about 3 years but when it finally got opened it was rank. What a waste!!

send it to and ill let u know

I bought a bottle of Dom Perignon in 1985 for my sister and brother-in-law for the wedding gift, it was the last of the 1978 vinetage (I paid $55 Can), they claim to want to wait for 25 anniversay to drink it, I like the other fellow said they will be disappointed, well they will hav some very expensive window cleaner in the end.

It depends if it is one of those wines people age for many years.

Possible, but personally I think it would be unlikely.

Whatever, it is at the end of its life so drink it as soon as possible just in case...

It doesn't matter about the quality, but the vintage it came from, and how it has been stored.

If upright, then you are definitely on a sticky wicket. However, if stored properly, then you could be in with a shout.

If the bottle as you say is 15 years old and is a vintage bottling then you would be looking at maybe an 88/89. If this is the case then you might be in luck, as the last three years of the decade (88 - 90) were all declared and very highly sought after.

Here's hoping and good luck
