As a complete novice to wine, both red and white, I found the "Match Game" featured in the back of every Rachel Ray Magazine helpful.. It recommends wines to be paired with the featured recipes in the current month. Also listed, are different types of reds and whites with descriptions of each.

For instance, in the February 2008 issue says that when preparing her nacho spuds, pepper steak, beef and onion stir-fry, or sliced chicken with chunky mushroom gravy.. She suggests a full-bodied, tannic reds (barbaresco, barolo, red bordeaux, brunello, cabernet sauvignon, petite sirah, red rhone, shiraz/syrah, and zinfandel). Every issue is different and features about 15 meals with suggested wine pairings.

I found one site showing strong cheese, beef, and red pasta sauces across the board on several (if not all) types of red wine.

One last comment, I found this BEAUTIFUL chart on Kendall-Jackson's website (also printable in PDF form)

Depends entirely on the RED. It's best to match your RED according to similarities or to contrast.

Higher acid foods (citrus fruit and tomatoes) contrast nicely with Pinot Noir, as does Salmon and Grilled Chicken.

Richer, fattier foods (cheese, especially sharp cheeses, pasta & grilled meats) contrast nicely with a young Cabernet.

A nice Red Zinfandel will go well with pizza, pasta and cheese.

Drink up it's FRIDAY!

Another!

any yummy food will do.

a big mouth and another bottle

some pasta!

another glass!! or some nice crackers and a cheese selection..
