The response that anything can be made into a martini is a set up to make you look like you know nothing about drinks... a martini is only done with Gin and now, more popularly, with vodka, that said there are many variations of the martini but all revolve around these two ingredients (ie not Rum!). Wine is the fool proof order, outside that stick to classic drinks like gin/vodka and tonic or vodka cran, cosmo's etc, men will probably be sticking to nice beers and liquors neat, on the rocks or cut with soda once, not to say that women can not have these drinks, just that normally they are not "lady like". Also simply avoid wild, hot colored drinks, like daiquiri's and drinks mixed with blue caracoa, which are perfectly fine drinks, if it were a beach party... As for pace go slower than you know you can handle, this is a work function not a new years party with friends.

Red or white wine.
One an hour.

Martini if you like vodka or gin, white wine, red wine. Not so many that you get stupid.

At this type of an event, you should drink drinks that need to be sipped, not slammed! Wine, martini...etc.

Also, remember, whatever you normally drink, can be made into a martini....they can use Malibu, flavored vodkas, etc....you might feel dumb asking the bartender to mix you a drink, but chances are people will be inquiring about how good it is/looks, rather than the fact you didn't know what you were ordering!! :) I'd personally ask for a fruity martini made with Malibu and an ice water on the side so I didn't accidentally drink the concentrated martini too fast!!! One/hour is a good idea because remember....these drinks may taste the same, but are definitely stronger than normal...same thing with wine!! :)

Enjoy yourself but save the partying for when you're out with your girlfriends, not here!!!!!!! ;)

You can't go wrong with either white or red wine. Also something you sip--I personally prefer something like a vodka tonic...if you want something a little sweeter vodka and cranberry. I usually stick to a highball drink.

And pace yourself. You should be good with about one an hour or so.

get some pbr, jack and cokes, shots of rail whiskey, etc.

I love Chamborde martini's. You can sip them and they're sweeter then the regular version. 1oz. vodka... 1/2 oz Chamborde and just a splash of cranberry juice. Sip them slow as they are mostly alcohol.

Gin and tonic
Rum and Coke or diet
Wine
1 less than your boss has, topping out at no more than 1-2 per hour.

For a 4 hour party, no more than 8 ever... But if the boss has 5, then you have 4.

You don't want to seem stiff, but you don't want to get snit faced. If the crowd is heavy drinkers, and you aren't?

Quietly tell the bartender your drink is too stiff, and get another. When you get the less booze one, say "thats perfect, keep making *mine* like that." And tip double/triple.

Nothing looks slicker than ordering an absinthe with a sugar cube and water on the side. When you prepare the drink in front of everyone at the table using a fork as an absinthe spoon you will have everyone′s attention as the drink changes colour's.

Since the drink is very strong but tastes light, you will have everyone at the table ordering them and blasted in a few hours. Its the best way to turn a black tie work event into sex in the bathroom and a life time of glorious memories.
