It's important to remember that absinthe is a liquor. It wont cause hallucinations or trips or any other myths around it. It can be a very good liquor though.

Absinthe is an anise based liquor (think black licorice but not nearly as strong) with an herbal complexity. A number of brands (often from the Czech Republic and Germany, but not always) lack anise and shouldn't be considered absinthe, even though they use the name.

Most absinthe is banned because of an FDA regulation which customs uses to ban it's importation, but it is not a scheduled substance. It's legal to own but importation is a bit sketchier. If found by customs it can be confiscated but no one has ever been charged with anything beyond that. A number of vendors guarantee the order.

At the end of the month, Lucid absinthe, an absinthe which can be legally sold in the US will become available in limited quantities around the NYC area.

Never had it myself, but here is some info:

If you try it before you pick your best answer, please share with us whether you liked it or not. I am very curious about it myself.

And it is not dangerous, despite the rumors, at least according to the link above which says, "...no evidence shows it to be any more dangerous or psychoactive than ordinary alcohol."

Despite the fact that this it the drink that caused Van Gogh to cut off his ear, the brands sold today are quite safe. There are many ways to consume absinthe, but if you do it the traditional way you should make sure to use a sugar cube which you dip in the alcohol, light on fire, and then slowly add the water. Also, it is kind of strong and tastes a lot like licorice. Overall, it is a fun drink and great for parties, especially when you use the traditional absinthe fountains and spoons. Cheers!

and not, it is not dangerous. wine producers spread myths relating to absinthe around 1900 leading to a public perception that it is dangerous - you shouldn't post replies to this list if you don't know what you're talking about. Absinthe is legal in many european countries.

Go for it, i tried it once dont remember much, but i got pics and vids from freinds about how crazy it got
