Is Vermouth more economical than white wine when only using part of a bottle? Can you save unused Vermouth?!

Question: I don't want to buy a bottle of wine and only use a small amount of it in a recipe, then toss it out because it has gone stale. I thought I read that Vermouth is a good substitute for white wine in this case.

vermouth is generally sweeter than white wine and may give your recipe a different taste. i'd suggest sticking to wine. most liquor stores (including the one I work at) sell 1/4 size bottles of wine in 4-packs. they run anywhere between $5 and $7, which is close to the price of vermouth anyways. if you buy the mini wines, you can open just one to use for your recipe, then save the others without opening them so you don't have to worry about them going bad!

In most recipes using up to 1/2 cup, vermouth will work fine , and has a shelf life of over a year. "Gallo" is best to cook with.

you can, might have different taste. You can also use chicken or veggie broth. also you might look into buying some of those little single serve bottles like the have on airplanes That way you don't waste a whole bottle.

other substitutions can be found on the attached web page.

unless you use vermouth a lot, it to me is a lot of money to spend.
