Special occassions I would say its a toss between two. Woodford reserve and 1792. Both are excellent on the rocks and a good smooth Bourbon.
I do like Knob Creek for mixers but on the rocks it has a rather stout kick.
I know you said to stick with Kentucky but my everyday Bourbon is Sam Houston which is distilled out of Houston. This is a outstanding Bourbon that ranks up there with some of the best for about 20 bucks. I also have drank my share of Beam but as I get a little older I like to experiment. I have learned one valuable lesson though... more expensive doesn't always equal better bourbon.

check out some Sam Houston, yu'll be surprised.

Doc

I was going to say
Booker's and
Maker's Mark
You took the words right outta my mouth!

I agree with three of your four. I haven't heard of the Pappy Van Winkle before. I would add Wild Turkey to the top of the list. That's my choice but it has to be the Rare Breed. It is 109 proof and a lot smoother than the 101. There is also a brand called Bakers that is very good.

Beam is not one of my favorites. The taste is just a bit too harsh for me. Not that I'll turn down a shot or drink that is made with it. LOL!

EDIT 1-13-08: Doc, up until recently a whisky couldn't be called Bourbon unless it was made in Kentucky. I'll have to look up the Sam Houston brand. They are even making it in New York now. http://www.tuthilltown.com/index.php

Maker's Mark
Wild Turkey
Jim Beam
Four Roses

Jim Beam

And maker's mark

Mine is Jack Daniel or Jim Beam

Jack Daniels everyday.
Makers Mark and Ezra Brooks best level.
Knobb Creek good too!

Everyday bourbon is knob creek, special is Booker's, splash in, usually Wednesday around 4, a bakers just to keep it lively. Basil Hayden lacks the bite, makers too sweet, blantons overpriced, same for Jefferson reserve...real buy was eagle rare tll everyone caught on to its quality but cannot beat knob and now have the same price, rebel yell in a pinch, turkey okay but lacks the flavor depth. Like the Fighting **** branding bravado but cannot live up to branding.
