Beaujolais is known as an unpretentious wine that makes a good all around table wine and is perfect for sipping on a sunny afternoon. It can be served slightly chilled. The Noveau is noted for being the first release of that years crop of pinot, traditionally available on Nov. 15.
There used to be (maybe still) a big race to get the first bottles to London every year.

It just means new wine and like a lot of French things I think it's over rated. The wineries release their new wines and there's this whole big festival thing that goes along with it. But French wine, Italian, Chilean, Californian, South African wines they all have strengths and none is really better than another whether it's Beaujolais or Beaujolais Noveau.

It is recommended that it is served chilled which is unusual for red wine.

Beaujolais Noveau is usually launched in Britain in November each year and is the wine made from the current years' harvest. The fanfare usually means the wine is overpriced as the quality like all wines can be variable. Beaujolais is a light red, usually east to drink and apart from the Noveau release fairly unpretentious.

I have no idea, don't like it myself. The French like to think they're the best winemakers in the world but that isn't so any more.

A lot of the hype around Beaujolais Noveau is just that - hype. A lot of the stuff is not very good. Plain old Beaujolais, which comes from the gamay grape, can be good depending on the producer, just like any other wine.

Beaujolais Nouveau is the first drinkable wine that's sold in Europe from the first harvest. Here in Holland wine sellers have an annual race to get the first bottles from France to their stores and premium prices are paid to get the wine first. People throw parties that very same day, inviting friends at home.

Personally I think B N is overated- it is virtually impossible to make a good wine in such a short space of time.

The only thing special about Beaujolais is that it is made from a grape not widely seen elsewhere - the variety called 'Gamay'.

There are 10 named villages in Beaujolais that are allowed to put their name on the label, and these Beaujolais wines (known as ' cru's' pronounced crews) are more serious and better, and each are distinctly different styles (although grown in a small area from the same variety.)

Ordinary Beaujolais is a light easy quaffer, often the first red wine that white wine drinkers like.

Beaujolais Nouveau is a quickly made wine, less than 4 weeks from picking till release, intended for early drinking and usually pretty darn poor There was a tremendous amount of hype about it in the past and unfortunately the poor wines released then has damaged the reputation on Beaujolais as a whole.

Maybe buy 1 bottle of Beaujolais Nouveau to have an early indication of the years vintage, but best to buy a 'cru' Beaujolais. The 10 crus are Brouilly, Chénas, Chiroubles, C?te-de-Brouilly, Fleurie, Juliénas, Morgon, Moulin à Vent, Régnié, and Saint Amour.

there is nothing special about this wine . it is isued on the third thursday in november and was started as a marketing ploy to get the english wine snobs to try and become the first person to drink the current years vintage.
thus selling a prety average wine at inflated prices.
sometimes its nice and others its well not nice but as the wine is made from the gamay grape theres not much tanin so this wine allthough a red it can be served chilled and is a glugable wine nothing more than that. so enjoy it for what it is and thats cheap and chearfull red wine

Beaujolais is crep and usually full of tannin. It was hyped to bits in the eighties and was the drink of the unacceptable Thatcherite yuppie. People used to parachute it in, but I gather now volume has plummeted.
