What is it with the popularity of alcoholic cider recently?!
Answers: Throw some ice cubes in and suddenly it is all the rage!
It used to be one of the most popular drinks in America as well. Then a bunch of religious bitches decided to come up with Prohibition. People went super stupid and cut down all the apple orchards (and vineyards as well). Apple trees and grape vines take a long time to grow back, and most of these orchards/vineyards got plowed and converted to something other crop. After prohibition, beer was the easiest to start back up, as well as hard liquor since grains grow fast. The cider industry never really recovered, and the wine industry took a long time to get back to being respectable again.
Prohibition is one of the reasons American beer all became watered down crap, and the wines became kool-aid.
The end of the 20th century has brought back a huge awareness into craft beers and even ciders. People decided they got sick of all the same old crap and wanted good stuff again. Even in England with the REAL ALE campaign, a lot older style beers have regained popularity. Ciders are just another one of those older styles that have regained popularity with better public awareness.
I don't know that's as old as time itself.
i guess its coz it tastes nice and its cheap
There's been a revival of traditional cider going on since the start of this decade, according to Wikipedia.
There's nothing like some traditional Welsh or Scrumpy cider with a pub lunch. Although saying that, the smallest amount of scrumpy can send you straight off to sleep if you're not careful!
Cyder has always had a firm market, especially in the West and South West of England.
The recent mass popularity has come from an Irish Marketing Campaign. Unfortunately, for Magners (the originators of the campaign) it has proven to have promoted traditional brands even more!
As a countryman, I have always preferred cyder to beer.
FYI there is a famous Cyder House in Frankfurt Am Main, Germany. The German version of Cyder uses a diffuse number of apple types (rather like Magners) whilst the traditional English brands are brewed from a standard apple.
i think it's to do with marketing and the fact new/lesser known ciders such as pear & fruit are being introduced to the market
Its because young kids can drink it as it tastes of juice
Its a fairly common drink in the UK, and from what I understand, even the kids are allowed a little cider. One of my British friends described being drunk at 11, off of some cider. Another British friend of mine says its as common as our "40s" are...(Oh my I love 40s)
I personally like it but still have only drank it a handful of times. Theres a local brewery that specializes in apple cider and pear cider, both of which I tried at their pub. Not bad!
Keep an eye out for the spreading of our local Manchester rage of....pear cider.
I've been drinking it since whiteways of devon produced it in the 70's...suddenly everyone is drinking it!...and denouncing apple cider as a kids drink.
I've been a cider drinker for many years,I sometimes drink it at home. I like a strong, very dry cider. Some of the very strong ones I find insipid, all you can taste is alcohol. As for the way that it is drunk with ice in pubs and clubs, this was kicked off by the clever Magners advertising campaign. M agners have just announced a lowering of sales, this may be due to a new fad, or people realising that it is overpriced !
