sol and tecate are both "american macro style" lagers made by mexican companies, they will have the basic characteristics of a Budweiser/corona. Dos Equis really is not much different but is considered a "vienna lager" and has a more amber color, the taste difference reflects that, slightly more malty... Modello is the one that departs from the others, that's if you're speaking of negra modelo which you almost certainly are. It's very dark in color but still considered a "vienna lager", ie it's going to taste like a lager and nothing like what you might expect from a dark beer, especially if you're expecting it to be like a guinness. that said nerga modelo is far away the best beer out of this group of four, most beer geeks will thumb down this entire cast of four (and I'd agree for the most part on the first 3) but A modello here and there is fine by me.

even if you hate dark thick beers, I recommend at least trying the negra modelo as it really has no characteristics of what you'd expect from a dark beer and it's certainly not thick. Having been on vacation to a few Mexican "hot spots", I can say that you should not expect to find much beyond what you've listed (dos equis, tecate, corona, negra modelo, american offerings if you're a touristy spot- bud, bud light) For what it's worth sol is typically considered cheap beer, even by the locals, but I guess that will vary by region. depending on where you go you might also find leon, pacifico (both again made by the corona parent company)....
For a non-beer aficianado, Light and crisp to me would be a corona light with a lime and that should be easy to find both there and here to see if it suits you. Don't be afraid to try any and all, pouring a $2 beer down the drain really is no big deal (should you really not like it)

Dos Equis is similar to a Sam Adams - amber ale
Sol is a pilsner = Corona
Tecate is similar to Corona
Modello is a dark beer, i.e. a pilsner.

Of those, Dos Equis and Modello are the best IMHO.

If you like light tasting beer then Sol is the beer for you.

I hate to be the one to tell you this, but Mexican beers aren't known for being that good. In fact they are considered some of the worse. Negro Modelo is only halfway descent because it was brewed by Austrian immigrants in Mexico.

When you're in Mexico ask for a Michelada- SO Good!
It's Mexican beer, of your choice, with a heavy dose of lime juice and salt on the rim!
Pacifico is also very good, but I have to say Dos XX is my favorite.
