Is he an alcoholic???!

Question: 3 years ago he had adrinking and drug problem, he went to rehab, came out and for a year no problems, since then, "I can be an occasional drinker" he says....Lately it's been getting worse. He's found himself in drug using situations three times now, and his drinking although he says isn't an issue, I feel it is....Tell me does he have a problem, I started counting the week before Christmas, and everyday since he has had a few drinks, somedays worse then others, he justifies buying a big bottle of champagne and wine, "because I like to mix the two", or last night, he mixes his wine with gingerale, to make a spritzer "it's like having one drink by the time I have two glasses" he says. I don't have to have a drink everyday, but since that discussion a week and a half ago, he has done exactly that. He gets behind the wheel, yells at me when I won't let him, says that he's fine, and ANY time I mention his drinking he freaks out? Someone tell me dispite what he says should I be worried?

After living with an alcoholic father and an alcoholic husband I can tell you that yes he has a problem. Once someone is an alcoholic they are always one. Even if they have not had a drink in years. He cannot be an "occasional drinker". He must stay away from alcohol and drugs and not put himself in situations where they will be offered to him. My father would not be around anyone who was drinking even after 20 plus years being sober, he knew that the temptation would be to much.

I hope he will seek the help he needs to stop drinking. You must remember that until he is truely ready to stop you can't force him. You just have to keep talking, and urging him, and possible get to the point that you tell him he either gets help or you are gone.

Good Luck

Yes, he is, and right now he is in relapse and also denial. I am sorry but it will probably get a lot worse before it gets better. You might try joining al-anon. Be aware and warned that you will be caught in the middle. That is one of the horrible parts of addiction, it effects everyone around the addicted. Sounds like the driving thing is going to be an issue too. He would freak out, deep down he knows and is probably scared... Very good people have this issue all the time. Good luck!

Denial isn't just a river in Egypt.

You don't need to be a drunk to be an alcoholic. Also isn't one of the themes for recovery something along the line of "once an alcoholic always an alcoholic." Sounds like he didn't learn the rules of rehab. Espically if he's putting himself in situations where he is exposed to drugs and alcohol.

He has a problem and so do you. You letting him drive is a problem and if he gets caught you can also get a ticket.

The ticket you get is called "Permissive of a DUI or DWI" and is almost as bad as if you were driving intoxicated.

The occasional drinker is not someone who drinks 2 or 3 a night or mixing wines.

He needs to go back to rehab, If it does not get better try moving away from the influence.

yes... I am sorry for you.....good luck
