Drunk off beers?!


Question: people can be drunk after like two beers or like five or whatever. but now that i think of it, beer only has like 5% alchohol if even that. so why can people get so drunk off beer if it is not that much. also, last weekend i had SO much to drink and i was not even tipsy... i do not think i am building a tolerance so what else could it be?

Jennifer gave you an excellent answer. The only thing I would add is that it depends on what type of beer you buy. Most beer sold in the U.S. is 3.8% alcohol. In some areas it's 3.2%, but there are also others that are much higher, so you should be cognizant of the alcohol content of the beer you are drinking. 3 cheers for Jennifer though..you gave a wonderful response.

It really varies on your height and weight. The bigger you are - the more it takes to get you drunk. That's why girls usually are drunk after like 4 beers and for guys, it takes them like 10.

It can also be what you ate that day. If you drink on an empty stomach, there is nothing to absorb the alcohol. If you eat bread or heavy food, then all of that alcohol you just drank will be absorbed by the food in your stomach.

You said last weekend you had so much to drink - was this just beer or mixed drinks, shots etc and where were you drinking? The reason I ask is because I find that many bars will water down their alcohol, and that could be another reason.

Also, how much time did you spend between each drink? It takes aproxamately 1 hour or your liver to remove 1 drink from your body, so 1 shot, 1 beer, 1 drink, etc.

Worst case scenario - there could be something wrong with your liver. Your liver is the organ that processing and cleans out that alcohol from your body. If you think this issue is none of the above, then you may want to see your family doctor and have a work up done.

did you eat before drinking? maybe it didn't hit you as fast b/c the food helped absorb the alcohol.

lots of thing factor into it, whether or not your had an empty stomach, what foods if any did you eat proir to drinking, what the time frame of your drinking was, alot of beers in a short time makes one drunker, but 6 beers over 8 hours will not produce the same buzz. I suggest that you watch how much you drink and if you are under age, STOP before it becomes a problem and gets someone in trouble.

Because it is 5% Alcohol By Volume or ABV. A standard 12oz serving of beer actually contains the same amount of alcohol as a 2oz standard serving of liquor at 40% ABV. Same goes for a standard 8oz glass of wine.

Here are the facts for you:

1) Standard serving sizes are set that way so you know exactly how much alcohol you are intaking.

2) Eating/Not Eating only has a minimal effect on intoxication. The drunk feeling is due to the alcohol being in your bloodstream and not in your stomach. You don't metabolize a Cola faster because you haven't eaten.. Why would you metabolize alcohol any faster?

3.) Most American beers are 4.1% to 5% ABV. Lambics and Saisons (spontaniously fermenting farmhouse ales) have lower ABV of between 2% and 4%.

Beer doesn't get you drunk. That's why you have to drink like 5 or 6. That's why they sell beer in packs. Cause you're gonna need more than one. And if you had lots of beer last weekend, you prbably have built a tolerance because beer is nothing but like a little alcohol and like hops and barley and some other crap. So there is not much there to get you messed up. Time to step it up and have a stiff drink. Have something on the rocks, like two or three drinks, then have a beer afterwards. That will get you going. Try taking Patron shots and chase it with a beer. That works too.
