How does one go about ordering a round for everyone at a bar?
If I wanted to order a round for everyone at a bar, what should I expect to happen? Would I be ordering a specific drink for everyone, or when people go to order their next drink they don't have to pay for it and it goes on my tab? Anyone care to explain it to someone who's never done it or known anyone who's done it?

Additionally, how would you estimate how much it would cost you? Do you check out how many people are there, and take a high average of the cost of a drink plus tip? Seems like it could get into the hundreds of dollars.

Generally in north America, all you have to do is tell the bar manager or the chief bartender that the next round is on you. They will do the rest.
Depending on the type of establishment your are at, they might just ring a bell and shout it out, or they will just start pouring a round of what everybody is already holding in their hands and start sending it to the tables. Normally, the staff willl let everyone know you are buying a round for them.
For budgeting, plan on spending US$5-7 per head, and please do not forget to tip the bartenders and waitresses. As unfortunately, most benefactors of your kindness will not tip on the free drinks they get.

You order whatever they are drinking and you pay for it . You can remain anonymous or not .
I have been known to buy the bar a round, it is done a lot where I live. You are buying everyone a drink whatever they are drinking. You can say you want to buy everyone a beer and that's what they get. Then you pay the bartender for the drinks. I hope this has helped you.
You tell the bartender, he takes the drink orders, usually people will order up when someone else is buying so expect a hefty bar tab, be sure and tip the bartender too.
Yep, like the others said, you tell the bartender you want to buy a round for the bar, and their next one is free, whatever they are having. It will cost you a bit, but creates much goodwill. And yes, don't forget to tip the bartender, or buy him/her a drink if thats allowed.

Tip: If you are buying a round at the bar, the guy (or girl) that's drinking that draft is going to order (9 times out of 10) the most expensive drink they can think of, that they really wanted, but wasn't really ready to buy. Your bill will be quite hefty after the first round, and forbid, anyone comes in, in the middle of the whole deal, you're screwed. You have to buy them a drink too. Protocol dude protocol.
