Question:

How do you change a beer barrell/keg? And the gas, too?

I'm asking because I start work in a pub in a few days time, and I told them I could do it. Do you think there's any likelihood of me being able to work it out for myself on the spot?

Check that its definately the keg thats empty, if not try refloating the plastic bit or Changing the gas - see below

CHANGING A KEG
On the wall there is a plastic tube where you'll be able to see the beer normally, underneath it there is usually a small metal or plastic lever usually red/ grey or black in colour turn this so that the gas supply is off.

For most brands it is simply a case of lifting the handle and unscrewing it from the kegs (some of them such as Heineken and Woodpecker in some case you have to pull the handle towards you and then up and in other cases they slide on to the fitting)

Take off the cap on the next keg (check beer is in date!) and do the reverse of what you have just done to take it off. Make sure it is secure.

Turn the gas back on using the little lever and at the top of the plastic tube there should be a little plastic switch turn that and press the button at the bottom till the beer fills the tube. Usually you will have a bucket to catch the ullage in.

CHANGING CO2/MIXED GAS

Check the gauge to see which one is out. Turn the little wheel on top of the cannister to the closed position. Using a spanner unscrew the nut. Making sure you have the correct type of gas and that it is in the closed position, attach the nut and tighten it up then turn the wheel to the open position. I f you feel or hear any gas escape turn it off immediately and head for fresh air cos that stuff will knock you out if you're in enclosed space.

IF YOU'RE IN ANY DOUBT AS TO WHAT YOU ARE DOING PLEASE ASK SOMEONE, PEOPLE HAVE BEEN INJURED AND KILLED MESSING ABOUT IN CELLARS AND REMEMBER THESE ARE PRESSURISED CONTAINERS.

Too hard to explain. so many set ups to chose from. need more info. Ask the bods that you got it from.

turn gas of first then you can un clip leaver and pull of pump change barrel attach leaver (depends on what beer/Stout/ale/bitter barrel is) slide over line up the lines on Handel to barrel and re-connect switch gas back on pump air thru till your beer fills the air lock tube then your done, and as for gas im not to sure but i think its more or less the same??

Difficult to explain if we don't have the make or brand of the apparatus you use... but as in the above post, the guys delivering the beer and gas should know and be able to show you. Are you in a hurry...?

i duno just as long as i can drink it who cares..........

Just unhook the thing on top of the keg. Replace with new and lock into place. For co2, pretty much same thing.

No you won't work it out on the spot and you shouldn't try, you should be trained properly for Health and Safety and Health and Hygiene reasons.
