What is the best way to enjoy a single malt Scotch whiskey?!
Answers: I have a bottle of Lagavulin 16-year old, and I'm assuming it should be imbibed straight... am I correct in that assumption?
Do as the Irish do, add just "A wee bit o' Heather" to the drink to open it up and bring out all the full, unique flavors of the single malt.
This old adage means to add just a splash of pure mountain spring water, that is the traditional, old school, correct way to imbibe.
The addition of a fine cigar certainly will not detract from the experience!
You are correct. At the most, a single ice cube.
Inbibe it in a mannor that pleases your tast buds or send it over to me for a full and honest report.

On rocks.
. . . with fig newtons
yes, drink it straight. don't be like white trash celebrating a million dollar inheritance by mixing expensive liquors with coca cola.
There is no wrong answer here - it's all a matter of your personal taste. Some people enjoy it neat, while others like one or two cubes (small ones, of course - not the big ones in your freezer trays ;) ) in their whiskey. You may prefer it neat with a small splash of water or club soda, or like it over ice (on the rocks). You can even drink it with your favorite mixer, although most single malt scotch drinkers will scream sacrilege at the thought of polluting a fine whiskey with an ordinary cola (or god forbid - a diet cola!).
In the end, it's your whiskey to drink however you please. And since you have an entire bottle you can try it each of the ways offered here and see what you like best. I would recommend doing that over a few nights - not all in the same night. ;)
Slainte!
You are totally correct in what you perceive to be an assumption. The best way to enjoy a single malt is to taste as many of them as you can. It is, after all, the distillers art, and we are the consumers. Find what you like. For me, a little ice tends to discern the flavor aspects for me. But that's just me. Learn to taste and teach your palate. Within this balance comes the enjoyment.
Straight up. Neat. Preferably with a nice cigar. Maybe a Fuente Fuente Opus X? Indeed...
it is a matter of personally taste, I would try it neat first, then go from there
I don't meen to be persnickety here but A scotch whisky is spelled with out the e before the y. American whiskeys are spelled with a e before the y.
Scotch whisky
Bourbon whiskey
I used to teach a class in Beverage management at a Culinary Arts Class and I realized the spelling difference.
Yes I agree you may drink it any way you like. The most prefered method I like is drinking it chilled neat or over ice with a splash of water. However, less expensive scotch I have had with mineral water. Of course it is up to the person who owns the bottle as to what way is best for him or her. Try different methods and figure out which way works the best for all. We all have different likes and dislikes.
Here's tae ye.
Cheers to your health!
I prefer my scotch with 2 small cubes, but starting out on a bottle of 16 year old, I would have to say at least the first glass should be neat.
