The best solution is to go to your local and trusted wine shop and ask for advice, If your supermarket has someone capable of giving advice try that; when cooking the quality can be sightly lower.

Try Lambrusco!

If it's just for putting in a recipe, don't go overboard. Look for wines which use the Syrah or Nebla grape - the wines tend to be deep, sweet and 'plummy'. This should remain after cooking off the alcohol. For a specific example of the above, try a Barolo.

Sangria

i have seen a recipe that calls for sweet & fruity red. what is it for? Fruity is not the same thing as sweet. Fruity just means that it has pronounced fruit flavors. in that case I would probably use something like Ravenswood Zinfandel. very blackberry jam tasting.

If you are truly needing a sweeter red wine, you would have to probably use a port. But you won't be able to find anything under ten.
