What does "Dubbel" mean on a beer label?!

Question:

What does "Dubbel" mean on a beer label?

Answers:
it means "double ale" or two fermentations, usually a dark beer .

Belgian ales often carry additional wording on their labels indicating their strength. This applies to their original malt strength not their alcoholic strength. Variations may appear as follows:

Single:
Dutch/Flemish - enkel (pron. 'ankle')

French/Walloon - ?

Double:
Dutch/Flemish - dubbel (pron. 'double')

French/Walloon - double (pron. 'doobluh')

Triple:
Dutch/Flemish - tripel (pron. 'treepel' or 'trippel')

French/Walloon - triple (pron. 'treepluh')

Quadruple:
Dutch/Flemish - quadrupel (pron. 'quadruple')

French/Walloon - quadruple (pron. 'quadrupluh')

Also on the Trappist Ale "La Trappe" you will see the Latin versions: Angulus, Duplus, Triplus, and Quadruplus.

Dubbel means twice the amount of malt but don't be fooled these belgians pack a kick!! Their alocohol content can be as much as 9%. I learned my lesson once drinking 3 on a Friday night waiting for my date, by the time he arrived I couldn't stay on my stool. Damn they're good!

yes dubbel is flemish for double. are you by any chance drinking Grimbergen? the one with the red label tahts 6.5 % alcohol? that is the bomb as far as beer goes! i am addicted. in this case dubbel refers to double fermentation.

and homegrow, grimbergen also makes a beer that is 10 % alcohol!
