Here's 3 red wines that I'd recommend:

De Martino 2005 Organic Cabernet SauvignonCabernet Sauvignon grapes from the Maipo Valley are blended with Malbec and Carmenère grapes to produce a deep red wine with violet hues and an intense aroma of blackberry, cherries and truffle. Great volume and cherry flavor. Aged in oak barrels for 12 months. Ideal served with pasta, red meat, and aged cheese. ($14.99)

Renwood 2004 Old Vine ZinfandelThe 2004 Old Vine Zinfandel is medium ruby in color. The bouquet consists of brown sugar, caramel, sage, eucalyptus, and bursting with dark berry fruit. The flavor is a sumptuous blend of warm blackberries on the entry, with a hint of dried fruit, finishing with sweet fleshy tannins.($19.49)

Rosenblum 2005 Heritage Clones Petite Sirah This wine is amazing both in aromatics and flavors, not to mention the color, which is jet black. It exhibits a bouquet and flavors of ripe blackberries, plums, chocolate, black pepper, violets and spice. ($18.49)

I like Yellowtail brand, but not merlot - too smoky for me.

Shiraz is good, and also a Cabernet.

Im hooked on Shiraz

i like what comes in a box

After a recent visit to Sonoma county I have a great appreciation for Pinot Noir. It is generally a bit lighter as far as a red wine goes, but has great flavor and can be paired with many dishes. It is a grape that needs a specific climate , thus making it harder and more costly to grow. Hence it can be more pricey on a base level. It has been refered to as "sex in a glass".
Castle Rock Carneros Pinot Noir 2003 is great for the price.

Wine tastings are a great way to discover what types of wines and makers you like.

Enjoy

Try Mark West Pinot Noir - it's readily available all over and low-priced. I get it near DC for about $8 - 9 each bottle. His motto is "Pinot For The People" to provide affordable and drinkable pinot noir to all - lol http://www.markwestwines.com/

Also the Lindeman Shiraz is a nice price and a juicy, easy to drink red for even a little less than the Mark West Pinot Noir.

Try a Old Vine Zinfandal
Like Gnarly Head or Gnarly Vine
Manyana Tempranillo is also a very good red...almost like a Merlot/Pinot blend.
Carbernet Sauvignon is also excellent...
I guess from my suggestions I tend to lean towards blends.
By the way most of the ones I've suggested are also rather low in cost so you can experiment without going broke
