Why is the Pennyslvania Liquor Control Board (LCB) so up tight in selling booze?
One goes to Maryland, booze can be found at the grocery store, go to Arizona, Delaware, and same thing, came to PA and need to go to State Store for booze. Is the State that greedy?
Answers:
Pa is a commonwealth state that's why... A good portion of its taxes are made this way.. Why only get 6.5 % of the sales when you can get 100%. By controlling the sale of liquor at their state stores they rake in every dime.. Beer has to be bought at a distributor and isn't fully run by the state. This is because there isn't as much profit in beer as there is in liquor.
To make things even worse the state liquor tax..included in a drink when you buy it from the bar...was actually put in place to help the victims of the johns-town flood.. That was over 70 years ago...But manages to somehow stay on the books.
It's the same way here in NC. You can't get anykind of Liquor anywhere legally unless you go to the "ABC" store which they call it here. And you pay twice as much as it's worth.
I have no idea. I lived in PA for 10 years and know exactly what you are talking about, it's the same thing with beer, you have to go to the beer distributer for it. Someone once told me it just old laws from when they wanted to keep track of peoples alcohol consumption after prohibition ended. I personally think that is some broken thinking because you have to buy beer by the case at the beer store. Way to limit peoples consumption PA.
i am from IN but moved to PA 4 years ago and I cant figure it out I used to be able to go to cvs and get liquor in IN
I suppose the PLCB has been both uptight (i.e no booze sold on Sunday) and greedy (i.e. taxing the heck outta liquor, not allowing out-of-state wine to ship to private consumers here).
But PA Governor Rendell has been a catalyst for change--he approved Sunday operating hours for "state stores" and may be the reason that beer is showing up in our grocery stores . . . .
I heard that Wegman's, a food store in PA, plans to purchase liquor licenses so they can sell beer to drink in their store cafes and also allow six pack take-out.
Another PA food store, Weis, apparently has already started selling beer in a few of its cafes.
So, yeah, the PLCB has been puritanical, lame and all that, but things are slowly changing. Yay!
