to answer this first is the region you are in. if it is good for grapes as far as the climate, soil, altitude and so on . my Bible for all plants in that respective is Best westerns plant book.i was a ranch Foreman in Templeton CA. The Paso Robles area is comparable to were the best grapes have been grown for hundreds of years,France and northern Italy, As far as soil regional temp.and all the factors it takes to grow fantastic red grapes. towards the coastal areas in California is good for the cooler climate grapes like chardonnays.you need to find out you regions climate and were that is comparable to some great grape regions in Europe . even Australia has been producing good wines. my suggestion is moved to central California.lol good luck .
