Homemade beer... what do you use to filter?!

Question: I've used coffee filters, but they are so small it takes forever to filter it. Is there anything I could use instead of the coffee filters to get out the gross stuff that's at the bottom? Any ideas would help. Thank you

If you are talking about the yeast cake at the bottom of your primary fermentation container than the process in which you are "moving" the beer (to either end use or secondary fermentation) is all wrong, you should NOT be stirring up the yeast cake and definitely not pouring the container, you want to siphon the beer out and keep your siphon off the bottom/yeast cake, ie you simply suck out all the beer and leave the yeast cake behind. it's really quite simple, the filter is the process not a piece of equipment!

Cheesecloth works

old socks work great

My dad used to use my mother's panty hose - lol Hey... it worked for him! My grandpa used a cotton linen tea towel.

OH just for your Info
the scum at the bottom IS Normally trashed it will taint the rest of your work ..you do not want it
After the first coffee filter maybe 3 You did something wrong..

If you are talking about transferring the wort into the fermenter, I use a fine kitchen stainer placed on a funnel. If you are talking about syphoning from the fermenter to the secondary or bottling then you don't filter just be careful with the end of the syphoning hose. You are going to have some waste. The yeast you do pick up during this process will not bother anything.
