Is it safe to drink Cognac that has been in the sun for a year?!


Question: A friend of a friend, made a Green Dragon from Cognac by leaving the bottle outside for almost a year. No one will try it because everyone is afraid they will get sick. I said 80 proof was enough to keep germs out but I have no idea. Any and all thoughts are welcome.

There will be no germs. I'm a microbiologist and am not aware of any deadly/common microorganism that would survive in a solution of 40% ethyl alcohol (80 proof). In beer it is actually a severe chore to get yeast to survive up to 25%.

I don't know what this "Green Dragon" you've made is but as long as it isn't some half baked concoction I'm sure you'll be alright.

I'm guessing it will probably just taste like ***.

It's completely safe to drink....

no because its molecules have been exposed to solar radiation for a very long period of time.............. it can give you a bad tummy ache............. and mayb LBM>>>>>

its a brandy & brandy have high alcoholic % .It is taken with water or soda .Storing it for for 1year reasults in maturation
ie. increase in alcohol% & drinking it could reasult in serious consequenses.

If the cognac has been opened then for more than a few months, it will begin oxidizing and losing its flavor. It probably won't get you sick, but it will probably taste bad.

Unopened cognac will keep forever, but it's recommended that it be stored in a cool, dark place. Being unopened but in the sun could possibly affect the flavor, but it shouldn't get you sick.

A liquor like cognac does not "age" in the bottle like some wines do, so it will not increase in alcohol percentage (even wines that do age in the bottle stop the aging process once the bottle is open and the liquid is exposed to air).

I would pass on that, let someone else be the taste test dummy!
