Chateau Ste Michelle Columbia Valley is one of the best at a low price point... much better than some costing three times as much. It's a bit pear-citrus and buttery... but not overly oaky.
J. Lohr Riverstone is awesome... still not expensive at all... big and buttery with lime, peaches, minerals and toasty oak.
Feel like splurging? Try Chalone from California. It has a unique mineral quality, it's elegant, has a beautiful stone fruit flavor and it ages nicely if you're buying to cellar it or to give it as a give to someone who will.

Chardonnay is pretty much all awful. That's why it is typically stored in oak to impart at least some (though cloying & unpleasant) flavour.
Try an unoaked chardonnay if you can find one, or better yet, drink some Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Vidal Blanc, or Viogner... Try ANYTHING white from the Marlborough Region of New Zealand, it will be better than any chardonnay you ever tasted and will probably cost less. Chardonnay is less of a wine and more of a marketing success. Sort of the same way that disgusting pink stuff is!
Go to any restaurant and on the wine list you will find 20 reds (all generally interesting) and 20 whites (all Chardonnays that only an expert could tell one from the other, and would probably be unhappy to do so!)
What's with this obsession with such an uninteresting grape?
I do like Chateau St. Michelle. But there are loads of good ones. I guess it's really a matter of taste.

I find that it is difficult to find a very good chardonnay. Most wineries have gone over board with the whole oak thing.
Rombauer Chardonnay is one of the best oaky Chardonnays. This winery is in Napa and is well known for their Chardonnay. It is also one of the few Napa wineries that still lets you sample wines for free.
This Chardonnay goes for around $30 a bottle.
