Why is americas vision of alcholism different to that of the irish?!

Question: Im irish, I go out every fri, sat and an all day session sunday, Im young single and may have about20 Pints along with a number of shots and a fair ammount of whiskey! here this is classed as normal, I think its normal!
Yet americans go out once a week, Get slightly tipsy or even forget some of the night ( Regular occurence for irish, At least once a week) and start to think they are alcoholics?

not complaining, just looking for answers!

We live in a country that was founded by puritan madmen that were booted out of their own country for being such prudes.

Yeah their vision of alcoholism is blurred

because americans are gay?

2 days till i get drunk again :D

hmm good question

i'm irish, living in america... and i wish i could go out every night that i dont have to work but i cant afford it.....

is that the irish in me?

or... omg am i an alcoholic?

joking with you, but i completely see where you are coming from.

good luck with the answer...

In America alcholism is a vice, in Ireland it's a virtue.

American culture is still based in Puritanical belief, which dictates that anything in pleasurable or in excess is a sin. Americans also don't drink from a young age as most Europeans do, so they have not developped a comfortable familiarity that comes with practing a particular behavior as a young person.

With that said, the main difference between alcoholism and recreational drinking is its motivation. Do you need alcohol to cope with the average stresses of life? Do you feel that your life is empty without it? Do you experience physical withdrawal symptoms when you can't have it? If so, then you might be alcoholic, but if you can enjoy it without dependency, then you are safe. Just remember to drink with friends and have a DD.

i wonder the same thing. i think irish people have grown up w/ drinking alcohol as an everyday thing. that seems to be a part of the irish culture.

You're on a slippery slope mate!

Having drunk in Ireland (on many occasions) I know where you're coming from. Same in Scotland. It's a way of life.

However just because we've been brought up with it all around us, doesn't mean that it will do any less harm. I'm not going to preach. Can't be bothered.

Give yourself a bit of a detox from time to time and make sure that your drinking is your idea. When you want to do it. Don't get to the stage when you NEED to...

Good luck to you and enjoy yourself.

im Irish, never drank 20 pints and whiskey on top of that!!, nah, wouldnt say thats normal. i doubt if its normal anywhere. yes, we are known to like our beer/drink, as well as a good singsong. now 10 pints, thats more like normal :-)

it has cause way to many tragic things and we have a different attitude about all of the old world crutch's it a big land. my family come as deters years ago in 1610. good luck dude. there was once room to spread out your wings. you can still grow.

I'm a recovered alcoholic, I have spent 3 months in re-hab and been a member of AA for nearly 15 months and haven't had one drink in that time.

I'm not a puritan and it's up to the individual what he/she does with their lives, but you are an alcoholic and it is not considered 'normal'.

My wife died an alcoholic when she was just fifty, the same is likely to happen to you if you carry on as you are, if that is ok with you, then it is ok with me, that's your choice.

Whatever you think of Americans, they do have in general a different attitude towards alcohol, whether you think that's better or worse is up to you, that's one of the reasons why their minimum age is 21.

It was reported in the papers this week that Britain is the only developed nation in the world, where deaths from liver disease are rising, according to Health Service documents, is this 'normal'?

If you want to live, join the AA, if you don't carry on, the choice as they say is yours!

I know exactly what you mean. I'm also Irish and like you my friends and I would have enjoyed the weekend, drinking a couple of nights in a row. I'm now pregnant so of the demon drink. However, the Yanks seem to think that if you even touch a short then you're an alcho. But then again you also have to be dating for a while before you even snog each other.
I heard Colin Farrell being interviewed, think it was The Late Late and they asked him about his "relationships" with all the stars ie Britney and Paris. He said that all that happened was he met them in a club and they had a court - snog. This would be natural at home. Nothing more expected, the next thing he knew it was all over the papers that he was having a relationship with these people.
Americans need to let their hair down a bit and start to live life a bit. Relax and enjoy it.
