Help! I need a crash course in wine knowledge?!

Question: For Valentine's Day, I am planning on a sushi dinner at home with my boyfriend. I'm not a big fan of wine, but it seems like the most appropriate drink for the occasion. I would lean toward something Asian, like a plum wine, to go with the Asian cuisine, but I honestly have no clue where to go from there. Can anyone help me out? (maybe a brand name or a certain type that pairs well with sushi? I'm looking to spend maybe $20 at MOST on a bottle, I'm not made of money after all ^_^)

Thanks!

Depends on how spicy your sushi dinner is going to be... More spicy food needs more sugar in the wine to pair correctly; i.e. Riesling. Not as spicy, the I'd go with something a little more acidic, like Sauvignon Blanc. Even a brut sparkler would be a good pairing. If you're totally out of options, a bottle of Asahi or Kirin or Sapporo will do the trick in a pinch...!

with sushi, go with a slightly sweeter white wine like a reisling, or a pinot grigio...

any $10 bottle will be fine...find something from Australia...they are all good...

i'd go to a decent liquor or wine store and see if the employees can assist you in picking the perfect wine to pair with sushi

when i eat sushi i drink pinot grigio or another lighter white

or sweetened iced tea. not sure why but it just pairs well.

For a sushi dinner , get any dry red wine. My suggestion for cheap but good is "Cabernet - Sauvignon" at any supermaket. You can't go wrong with that.

Kator, not knowing what kind of sushi you will want to indulge in. Or whether you will have a combination of sushi and stir-fried dishes and dumplings. You could try a Saki. Should the rice wine deter you then Give up on the wine, and have a BEER... This may be more pallet-able and would be less expensive. A wine may compliment a meal yet does not complete an evening.

Try Elephant Beer...

I manage a wine shop but this is a tough question to answer since it's hard to predict what is available in your area. My best advise is to go to a local sushi restaurant and check out their wine list. Most good restaurants have selected wines that match their cuisine. You have a few days check out a few restaurants; in person or online. Remember wines are 2 X more money in the restaurant.

To keep it traditional I would suggest a dry beer from Japan either Asahi Super Dry or Kirin Ichiban Shibori for enjoying with your sushi and then serve a sake (rice wine).
