What wine to stock in my asteroid shelter?!
Answers: If an asteroid was about to pulverize the planet, and I had only room for one case of wine in my bunker, what should I stock it with?
I like to put great thought into my wine pairings and this one is just perfect! Lets see..... a mixed case is certainly the way to go!
First off forget about the Cabernet Sauvignon standby for the longevity of the wine since you probably wont really be storing it long, but four ready to drink cabs would certainly be in order since they are higher in alcohol (you'll need that) than most other wines. Life is to short to drink cheap wine so go with the Penfolds, Older Heitz, Camus Special Select or even a good year Opus.
A nice Oregon Pinot Noir would also be in order as the lighter bodied juice will go great with a fallout shelter standby, Spam! Since you will be there for a while I would get four bottles of say Adelsheim Pinot Noir.
A couple bottles of champagne are certainly needed as well. One for the initial impact and one just before you exit the shelter as you really do not know if opening the door will be your last moment or not. I am not a big brand name guy but I must say a nice bottle of Krug will give your mouth the proper dryness before you go out into the new arid environment. For the initial impact bottle go with something more lively, I like Veuve Clicquot Rose', but it's up to your taste.
Finally a couple bottles of Savignon Blanc would be perfect for your first day out of the shelter. Not only will it give you a wonderful pallet cleansing feeling it will also bring out those nice earth tones that will certainly be choking the life out of you as you explore your strange new world.

Cheers!
