4 days: cork or stopper is fine. Just make sure it's sealed from air. No need for fridge with a red
Depending on the type, usually 3-7 days. Generally you would want to store white wine and champagne in the fridge and red wine at room temperature. Air is the enemy here, so if you can't drink the wine within a few days, buy a smaller bottle or invest in a vacuum sealer, which only about $10 at stores such as Bed Bath and Beyond.
Just don't let air get to it and put cork back and you can drink it up to 5 days after wards!
Red wine oxidizes fairly quickly and within 24 hours is usually fading even if quickly recorked. You can get a little more shelf life with a device called a Vacuvin that uses a small pump and a special one way cork to extract air from the bottle.
White wine can be recorked and refrigerated for several days but if you were to taste a fresh bottle next to even a two day old bottle even a neophyte could tell the difference.
A good bottle of wine should be fully enjoyed when opened.
There are a few answers to your question:
1. Open freely, about a day or so. (If a wine is too bitter I'll leave it open to breathe overnight and usually it's much better the next day) This forces the wine to oxidize very quickly, due to interaction with oxygen.
2. Putting the cork back in, about a day or two (at the most)
3. Vacuum (these are rubber stoppers with a vacuum pump), up to 3 days or so. Maybe 4 if it's sealed well enough.
4. They sell nitrogen kits for cheap that are made to force nitrogen into the bottle. This displaces the oxygen, completely preventing oxygen from touching (and thus oxydizing) the wine. I've heard of wine lasting over a week this way.
